Proposed Georgetown Shores Triathlon

The Association has also been approached by the promoters of the Grand Rapids Triathlon requesting to have Georgetown Shores host an Olympic and a Sprint distance race using both East GS and West GS lakes on the morning of Saturday, July 28th.

The event would be based just north of the boat launch parking lot and they would take care of all insurance planning and administration. They are asking some residents to step forward to volunteer to man aid stations or other tasks. They are also proposing the placement of a tent for the event along with some family friendly fun activities at the site. (moon walk and other family fun). We are looking into having a Community wide cook out for the afternoon and evening of the 28th. We are looking for some residents who are willing to help for the Triathlon (In the morning) and also some residents who would like to help plan the Residents Cook Out (for the afternoon). Please contact us if you are interested in helping.

More information will be forthcoming via this web site and e-mail, and the promoters will be joining us at our meeting on April 14th to discuss their events and address questions.

The triathlon would be a great event to have…how would it be run? Is it open to residents only? If you have a team, then I suppose one member from each team should be a resident.

I worry a little about parking, stageing, etc. though…but I’d be all for being on a team and helping out.

The Triathlon will be open to anyone who registers. It would not be only a redidents event. I would assume that teams could enter but to the organizer, it would be individual entries.

Most triathlons in the area allow teams of 2-3 people, the GR and Millenium ones are run that way…I was on a team of three last year for the Millenium Tri and did the biking…

Again, my biggest worry is parking the day of for all the participants and friends / family that will want to come and watch.
It may not be busy the first go around, but as this gains momentum and if we host if every year it will only get busier.

That part of needs to be planned out to a T and should be addressed prior to any commitment being made….most residents should be on board with the idea too. I think it’s a great idea if we can get the logistics worked out.

The organizers of this triathlon are the same group that do Grand Rapids Tri (the one in Ada). They will work with local developers to have parking set up on empty lots and we have also talked to them about the option of shuttle busses from local church lots. The date is set for July 28th and promotion has started.
